Steps to Take After a Car Accident
Because a driver doesn’t experience a car accident every single day, many drivers aren’t sure what to do after the crash has occurred. Indeed, it may be the first collision you’ve ever experienced. That’s where Utah Accident Clinic’s step-by-step guide comes in handy. We’ll prepare you for the process of dealing with the aftermath of a car accident.
Call the Police
It’s the very first thing to do. Call the cops before getting out of the car to inspect the damage. Meanwhile, unless there are severe injuries involved, don’t talk to anybody about the accident until the police arrive—especially the other driver. Under no circumstances should you ever admit fault. Once the police arrive on the scene, you’ll fill out an accident report and it’s important to provide only the most accurate information, to the best of your recollection.
Take Pictures of Car Accident
Now that you’re confident the police are on their way to the scene, you can get out of the vehicle and inspect the damage. You’ll want to take pictures of the damaged vehicles, location of the collision, visible injuries, and any other corroborating factors, such as an obstructed traffic signal. Photographs are important for personal injury lawsuits and insurance companies. Having a detailed record of the crash will support your claims if you were not at fault.
Exchange Details with the Other Party or Parties Involved
If the accident has resulted in significant damage or injuries, you may not be able to proceed beyond Step 1. However, if the collision is not terribly serious, you can now approach the other driver(s) to exchange information. Regardless of the apparent damage involved, all parties involved in the accident are required to furnish their personal information before leaving the scene. You’ll want to get the following from the other driver(s):
Name
Phone number
Home address
Insurance information
Driver’s license number
License plate number
Contact Your Car Insurance Company
There are a number of variables that come between taking pictures of the car accident scene and exchanging details with the other party. You may need to seek medical attention. Your car may need to be towed away from the scene, and you’ll need to call a friend or family member for a ride. At some point in the near future, you’ll need to contact your insurance company to report the incident. If you’ve followed all the above steps, you’ll have everything you need to file a claim.
