Soft Tissue Injuries after an Auto Accident

If you’ve been involved in an auto accident, it’s very likely that you’ll have some soft tissue injuries as a result. When your body is put under an immense amount of trauma such as a strong jolting movement from a car crash, there are muscle groups that shut down and the nervous system goes into defense mode. This can cause you to have those soft tissue injuries, which can be treated with chiropractic care. Utah Accident Clinic specializes in treating patients who have been involved in an auto accident. Our therapists will help you to reduce inflammation, increase mobility, and heal your soft tissue injuries.

Types of Soft Tissue Injuries

Your ligaments, tendons, and muscles are considered to be the body’s soft area. This area is susceptible to what is called soft tissue injuries. Some of the symptoms, aside from pain and discomfort, that you may experience from this type of injury is bruising, stiffness, and swelling. The most common type of soft tissue injuries after being involved in an auto accident are sprains, strains, and contusions.

When you experience a sprain, you will have limited mobility in the injured area, localized swelling, and muscle weakness. These symptoms are due to an overextension of a joint.

Contusions are also known as bruises and occur when there’s been a direct blow or impact to the injured area. The bruise is basically a collection of blood under your skin. You will feel pain when touching this area.

When your ligament has been stretched or torn, you may be experiencing a strain. This injury results when a normal range of motion is disrupted and is forced to move in an unnatural way. You will experience much of the same symptoms as a sprain, but with increased pain.

Treating the Soft Tissue Injuries

There are some things that you can do at home that will help to reduce your recovery time and reduce pain levels. The best thing you can do is to rest and try not to use the affected area. If you are feeling that the injured area is inflamed, you can apply an ice pack to it several times a day. Just be sure not to apply the ice directly to your skin, and use a cloth to place in between. While you are resting and icing the area, you can also elevate the injury to help reduce the swelling.
