What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit

Your first chiropractic visit will most likely create a bit of uncertainty. It’s common to have questions about the ins and outs of chiropractic care, especially for first-time patients. Because chiropractic treatment is constantly evolving, even veteran patients aren’t aware of current strategies and techniques. However, at Utah Accident Clinic, your first appointment will follow a fairly straightforward template where we provide as much information as we can and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

Patient Intake

Upon arrival at your first chiropractic clinic, you’ll be asked to fill out a general health questionnaire. You’ll also be asked to provide some information about your past medical history, including chronic injuries or pain. The questionnaire may also involve a section about your personal life, your work, level of physical activity, and any information that’s relevant to your reason for the visit.

Consultation

This is a preliminary step when the chiropractor takes the information provided on the questionnaire and develops a big picture vision for the reason of your visit. It’s during this phase that you’ll inform the chiropractor of where it hurts and how you believe the injury occurred. Once the chiropractor has a good idea of what’s going on, you’ll advance to the next stage.

Physical Exam

Following the intake and consultation, the chiropractor will perform a physical examination, testing your reflexes, checking vital signs, muscle strength, and range of motion. The chiropractor will then focus on your spine and the area that’s relevant to your pain. Because many back issues are the result of injuries not necessarily specific to the location of your pain, you may have an x-ray taken to assess the integrity of your skeletal anatomy.

Treatment Plan

Once the consultation and physical exam are complete, the chiropractor can prepare your tailored treatment plan. The plan may include additional visits, physical therapy, and your first chiropractic adjustment. Once the doctor has pinpointed your issue, treatment can begin immediately. Keep in mind that before starting your treatment plan, it’s important that you share any concerns you may have about the process.

Your First Adjustment

Your pain and type of injury will determine your first adjustment. In most cases, you’ll sit on a chiropractic table either face down, upright, or laying on your side or back. Your chiropractor will explain every step of the process before making any adjustments. Be forewarned—an adjustment might not be terribly pleasant at first.

The Follow-Up

Chiropractic care alleviates pain without surgery or pain medication. Your first adjustment is the first in a series of procedures that restore proper spinal function. In some cases, the follow-up visit will be a repeat of the first adjustment. Sometimes, the follow-up is just for confirmation that you no longer have pain. In any case, it’s important that you stick to the treatment plan, regardless of frequency. Otherwise, you may not see a full recovery. If you have any questions about your first visit, contact Utah Accident Clinic and we’ll help with anything you need.
