Avoiding Back Pain During the Holidays
Some go traveling during the holidays, while others stay home and celebrate with family and friends. No matter what your plans are, it’s important to take care of your spine to avoid any back pain during the most wonderful time of the year! Our staff here at Utah Accident Clinic have a few tips that will help you get through the holiday season without any back pain weighing you down.
Lift with Your Legs, Not Your Back
If you are traveling and have a heavy suitcase to carry, or if you’re taking out all of the holiday decorations from the basement, you want to be sure you lift with your legs and not your back. It’s easy to forget to do this simple task and it only takes one wrong move to injure your back. This is why you want to take your time when it comes to lifting anything heavy.
Take Shoveling Seriously
If you are in charge of keeping the sidewalks clear of ice and snow during the winter months, make sure you have a strong sturdy shovel. If your shovel breaks midway of you shoveling, you can easily pull or strain a muscle in your back. You can also injure your back if you are not standing properly causing you to slip and fall. You want to stand feet at the hip-width distance apart and move your feet as you need to, don’t twist your body and lift.
Sit Properly
Whether you are working extra hours at a desk job or just have extra time to lounge around the house, make sure you are sitting properly. Sitting incorrectly is one of the most common ways that people injure their backs. Practice sitting with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and feet flat on the floor. Keep your core engaged to help with keeping your back supported. You can also use a pillow to help as support.
