Can long periods of sitting affect your back?

Can long periods of sitting affect your back?

Many people spend a full eight hours of work sitting down at their office desk. Then, they hop on public transportation or in their car and sit down again. By the time they get home, they are ready to unwind and sit in front of the television before falling asleep. If this is you, don’t feel guilty, it has become a very common thing to do without even realizing it. While sitting down all day can feel nice and relaxing, there are many health concerns that come along with it, including back pain.

Health Concerns of Too Much Sitting

Research has shown that too much sitting can affect your back which can lead to other issues that include obesity, high blood sugar, and excess body fat around the waist. Your back is one of the most important parts of your body and what gets you up and moving. These health concerns do not mean you should quit your day job by any means, it should just give you push to get up and move a little more day by day.

A few simple changes you can make is by taking regular breaks while at work. These short breaks can include stretching, taking a lap around the office, or keeping small exercise equipment at your desk that you can do some reps with. When you get off of work you can try taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Another tip is when you get to work, park your car several stalls away from where you would normally park so it forces you to take a few extra steps when you’re off of work.
